The staccato rhythm of the vertical pillars and the fences helped to create the experience of fragmented space and controlled the viewer’s movement and the vision. It also helped to create a field of obstruction for the enquiring, sometimes voyeuristic gaze that can frame and pierce the female body, thereby addressing issues like fear and alienation, experienced by women within male dominated society. Articulation of physical space was explored on a different level. The spectator, in effect, designed (defined) the entire physical and temporal space as he/she moved between the pillars, thus shifting the role of viewer to that of actor.
